The 1990 color remake of "Night of the Living Dead" has received a lot of mixed reactions. In my personal opinion, it is an excellent film that outshines the original. It was directed by Tom Savini, the man who did the makeup/gore effects for George Romero's past zombie films, and Romero himself was heavily involved in this remake. What results is a film that stays true to the spirit of the original but gives it a well-deserved update.
Perhaps the most fascinating difference in the remake is the character of Barbara. In the original, she was terrified and hysterical, spending the biggest part of the film as a useless lump on the couch. The remake version of Barbara starts out very similar, but instead of mentally collapsing, she emerges as one of the most powerful female horror characters of all time. She fights zombies, uses weapons, and works to board up the house. Aside from Barbara, most of the characters seem similar to the original's, and the over-all plot is nearly identical. The gore-effects are fantastic, and the music is effective. All-in-all, another masterpiece. |
